
NEW DELHI, INDIA – During the National Institute for Smart Government’s (NISG) conference, S. Krishnan, the Secretary of MeitY, said that India’s IT and IT-enabled services will adopt AI models “to address sector-specific problems.”
You don’t need very large elements. What you perhaps need are sector-specific, purpose-built, limited models which apply to that sector and are able to solve issues and provide the critical solutions related to that sector. This is the direction in which we could expect India’s large software industry, IT-ITeS industry, to go in the days to come.
Krishnan’s statement echoes Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s stance to “look at AI as a technology which yields a lot of possibilities.” The Prime Minister believes that by doing so, they can create new types of jobs that not only provide employment opportunities but also elevate the skill level of Indian talent.
The Secretary is also encouraging the NISG to strategically leverage the current technology—AI and digital public infrastructure (DPI)—“in different spheres of governance” across India and the globe. When handled well, the initiative can “increase India’s own range of influence” and can “benefit the countries where they are deployed.”
