AI Isn’t Reducing Workload But Amplifying It, ActivTrak Finds

UNITED STATES — Workforce analytics company ActivTrak released its 5th annual State of the Workplace report, spotlighting a growing concern about the need for better AI orchestration. It covered trends in AI productivity and adoption by studying more than 443 million work hours across 1,111 companies and 163,638 employees.

AI adoption has increasingly matured, but the market remains divided on whether AI has efficiently taken over or complicated the workforce.

Predictions of AI-driven job replacements seemed to have come true, with companies laying off significant numbers of workers to make way for automation. This comes at a time when the technology has only just begun to cover a fraction of what it’s theoretically capable of.

Threats of AI disruption have been exacerbated by more companies embracing an AI-first workforce. However, new research suggests they have yet to close what’s known as the AI Measurement Gap—the comprehensive understanding of AI’s impact on workforce performance for genuine operational efficiency. Until then, organizations may face fluctuations in outcomes, prompting them to reconsider systems and workforce approaches.

Current AI Adoption Is Intensifying Workload, Not Reducing It

The prevalent belief about AI adoption is that it will make work lighter, shorter, and more manageable. It’s designed to handle repetitive tasks, allowing employees to do more with less effort, and a portion of ActivTrak’s report does support this assumption:

  • The workday has shrunk to 8 hours 44 minutes from 8 hours 53 minutes in 2023.
  • Productive hours have increased by 5% and productive sessions by 13%.
  • Collaboration time has also increased by 34%, now accounting for 13% of the total productive hours.
  • 75% of employees have maintained healthier work patterns.
  • Burnout risk has decreased, now just accounting for 5% of employees.

At a glance, the changes tell a conventionally positive story. AI is doing most of the work, leading to healthier work patterns. It’s handling more over a short period, cutting workdays without compromising productivity.

However, the report also revealed a more complicated story.

Shorter But Denser Workdays

While workdays are shorter, this doesn’t necessarily mean workloads are lighter. The report found that among 10,584 users whose behavior was compared 180 days before and after AI adoption, the time spent across different work categories has increased.

  • +145% time spent in messaging and chat
  • +104% time spent in emails
  • +94% time spent in business management tools
  • Activities with a decreased time: None

The bigger picture? AI isn’t reducing workloads—it’s amplifying them.

Workdays have compressed and become denser. Companies observed longer bursts of productive sessions among employees, supporting a “work smarter, not harder” approach. This is considered a win, as it reduced burnout risk, but it has also led to some behavioral tensions.

Focus Erodes, Disengagement Becomes the New Risk

  • The average focus efficiency fell to 60%, a three-year low.
  • Disengagement has increased to 23% of employees.

Companies have become better at preventing exhaustion. However, they haven’t gotten around to finding a better way to redeploy capacity.

The situation now is that employees aren’t burnt out, but they’re also less engaged. With AI in the picture, they feel their capacity isn’t being used or redirected to higher-value work, leading them to “check out” or just show up and do the bare minimum.

How Companies Can Win

Now, 95% of companies have already adopted AI, reflecting that AI adoption is no longer experimental but intentional. The companies that will win this race aren’t those still debating about adoption. Instead, they’ll develop a better AI deployment structure that leverages the technology and maximizes employee capacity.
