MANILA, PHILIPPINES — The Philippines’ healthcare BPO industry is undergoing a significant transition from traditional upskilling to applied learning as Healthcare Information Management Services (HIMS) experiences rapid growth through 2028.
Experts warn that, with this expansion, the industry must adopt new training methods to ensure talent can meet more complex demands. This is especially crucial as it is likewise expected to face a “triple-layered wave of disruption” from geopolitical shifts, AI and automation, and the changing market trends.
Salin Kataria, Healthcare Information Management Association of the Philippines (HIMAP) board member and Carelon Global Solutions Philippines’ clinical operations managing director, suggests that this new approach should include applied learning or training employees using real work environments.
Applied learning elevates skills to the point where they can address real-time challenges. HIMS companies should design training around real cases and ongoing team evaluations. Online learning combined with mentorship helps translate skills into daily work.
Carelon’s Clinical Advancement University is among the first institutions to implement this method. It has combined online modules and mentorship with actual scenario-based exercises. Its pilot program has shown a 21% improvement in employees’ skills scores, reflecting the process’s effectiveness.
What This Means to Companies
Outsourcing companies must understand that, beyond the flexibility in their training methods, it’s essential to continue developing their workforce skills to remain competitive.
In an ever-evolving market, talent is a key factor that determines success. By ensuring their workforce can handle real-world scenarios, outsourcing companies can develop scalable, effective talent that withstands disruptions.
